Edgerton man sentenced for immigration, gun crimes

MADISON, Wis. -

A Dominican Republic citizen was sentenced to 21 months in prison for illegally re-entering the United States and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to a state Department of Justice release.

Aneudy Benitez-Martinez, 33, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lynn S. Adelman Thursday. Benitez-Martinez pleaded guilty to these charges on Nov. 13.

According to the office of U.S. Attorney John W. Vaudril, Benitez-Martinez was arrested in Edgerton for illegally re-entering the United States on Aug. 22, 2013. During the arrest, officers found a .44 Magnum revolver in his home.

In a post-arrest interview, Benitez-Martinez admitted to illegally re-entering the country and possessing a firearm. Benitez-Martinez has a prior felony conviction for distribution of cocaine from the state of Oklahoma, according to the report.
