A Washington state man who lost his finger in a gun accident used his love of bikes to craft himself a new one.

Colin Macduff, a 41-year-old Navy veteran who did several tours in Iraq, was told by doctors he wouldn't need a prosthetic after blowing off part of his middle finger in 2009 and would just "have to deal with it," Seattle TV station KOMO reported.

He visited a prosthetics company, and was told there he'd need more of his middle finger amputated to fit the prosthetic's design.

Unsatisfied, the former welder and bicycling enthusiast put his degree in computer-aided drafting and design to the test.

Macduff crafted his own prosthetic out of leftover parts from a local bicycle shop, a process that took about eight hours, ABC News reported.

The finger has three parts. There's the ring where the prosthetic sits on the amputation, and the cage which goes over and protects the amputated digit. Macduff used a bike’s rear derailleur hanger for the tip, which simulates a normal finger tip, according to ABC News.

Now Macduff has his own business and sells his product to other amputees. He says the process was "very therapeutic" in his recovery.
