MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison police officer managed to prevent a major accident on the Beltline early Sunday morning after he spotted someone driving the wrong way down the highway.

The incident happened just before 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to police, the officer was traveling west in the westbound lanes when he spotted a car driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes. The officer turned on his squad lights and drove into the path of the oncoming car.

The driver didn't stop, and the officer had to swerve to avoid running into the wrong-way driver. The officer then got behind the car, and the driver pulled over.

Pritesh Talvanker, 28, of Owings Mills, Md. faces charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence along with driving against traffic.
