MADISON, Wis. -

Five public schools in Wisconsin have been named 2013 Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education for improving student achievement, according to a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction release.

The five schools are among 286 schools recognized nationwide, officials said.

The Wisconsin schools include Ridgeway Elementary School in the Dodgeville School District, Country Meadows Elementary School in the Muskego-Norway School District, Grafton Elementary School in the Grafton School District, Kohler High School in the Kohler School District and Suamico Elementary School in the Howard-Suamico School District.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools striving to achieve excellence, according to the release. Nearly 7,500 schools have received the Blue Ribbon honor since the program began in 1982.

Blue Ribbon Schools are recognized for leaders who articulate a vision of excellence and stay involved in day-to-day teaching and learning, setting high standards for teachers, students and administrators, diligently using data to adapt teaching and learning to support every student, and establishing a school culture of mutual respect and trust, according to the release.

State Superintendent Tony Evers nominated the public schools last fall, and each school completed an extensive application with evidence of student academic achievement, according to the release.

“These schools are among the select few nationwide that receive Blue Ribbon honors each year,” said Evers. "This award recognizes the collaboration among teachers, administrators and other school staff members along with parents and the community to help all students achieve so they are prepared to graduate for high school ready for college and career.”

The Blue Ribbon Schools get a plaque and flag, according to the release. A principal and teacher from the schools will also be invited to attend a recognition ceremony on Washington D.C. Nov. 18-19.
