DODGEVILLE, Wis. -

A Dodgeville man and former UW-Platteville student was detained in Northern Ireland Saturday as part of an investigation into a woman accused of trying to kill two police officers in a pipe bomb attack, according to a Belfast newspaper.

Detectives said Zach Gevelinger, 24, was visiting a pen pal, Christine Connor, in a women's prison. Connor is charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of pipe bombs related to an attack on police on May 28, according to the report.

The report states Gevelinger had been communicating with Connor on social networking sites and his visit to the prison was his first face-to-face meeting with her.

Detectives said Connor's mother arranged the prison visit for last Saturday. He was detained in the jail's parking lot.

Police searched a room at Gevelinger's hotel and seized his belongings, including computer equipment, according to the report.

Councillor Angela Nelson is an elected representative who got legal representation for Gevelinger. She told News 3 he as not charged with anything. She said a judge allowed police to hold him 96 hours beyond the 48 hour limit.

A statement from Gevelinger's aunt said he has not committed a crime or been charged with any crime and that they expect him to be released soon.

Nelson said she expects Gevelinger to return home July 16, the day after he's scheduled to be released.
