MADISON, Wis. -

The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the state Department of Natural Resources have started updating the state's land cover map.

Texas deer researcher James Kroll recommended the state update its map of vegetation, trees, water and urban land in his 2012 report on how to improve deer management in Wisconsin. The current land cover map was built using data collected from 1991 to 1993.

The DNR and UW-Madison plan to use fresh data from satellites to map more than 40 types of land cover in Wisconsin. The agency and the university hope to complete the project, dubbed Wiscland 2.0, by June 2016.
