DNR: Don't disturb emerald ash borer boxes

Published On: May 15 2013 06:44:14 AM CDT
MADISON, Wis. -

If you spot a purple box hanging in a tree this summer, agricultural officials are asking you to "let it be."

Federal, state and local officials overseeing Wisconsin's efforts to deal with the emerald ash borer will set the purple boxes as traps for the ash tree-killing insect. The goal is to find new infestations of the ash borers and track its spread in Wisconsin.

State agricultural officials say as many as 1,100 traps may be set in the next few weeks, mainly in counties where the insect has not yet been found.

The emerald ash borer was first found in Ozaukee County in 2008. It has since been found in 12 additional counties, including Brown, Crawford, Kenosha, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Racine, Rock, Trempealeau, Vernon, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha.
