Neighbors told News 3 there was some kind of commotion in the garage shortly before investigators showed up Sunday night.

“As soon as they wrapped the tape around the trees you kind of knew something was going on, but you didn’t know what to expect until you start hearing stuff,” neighbor Alex Wille said.

Wille said police came to his door and told him the woman who was found dead was the homeowner.

Deputies were called to 306 Scott St. at 7:10 p.m. Sunday for a report of an injured woman.

The middle-aged woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.

Sheriff Dave Mahoney told News 3 no one is in custody. He said the woman was discovered by a family member who was checking on her. He believes she died sometime Sunday.

"We have nobody in custody at this point, but we are following up on several leads, and look for the public and associates of this woman to call us if they have any information," Mahoney said.

Deputies said the death appears suspicious and detectives are following up with friends, relatives, past partners and acquaintances.

"We have multiple detectives working throughout the county following up on leads, and some are turning out to be fruitful at this point," Mahoney said.

Until the autopsy is complete, deputies aren't releasing the cause of death, but Dane County Dispatch did confirm that a call came in shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday night at the same address for an apparent gunshot wound.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Dane County tip line at 608-284-6900.
