COLUMBUS -

Darlene T. Piekarski, age 79, died on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Larson House in Columbus.

She was born on April 16, 1934, in Stevens Point to Frank and Mamie (Przybelski) Sobczak. Darlene was married to Michael Piekarski on November 20, 1954, in Stevens Point.

She may be remembered most for her tireless work with the Columbus Area Senior Center as a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer as well as a chauffeur to many senior citizens who needed it. Together with her husband, their service to the community was recognized by naming them the Columbus 4th of July Parade Marshals one year.

Darlene was a devout member of St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Columbus where she participated in raffles, often taking home prizes. She also used her inherent "good luck" at other raffles, scratch-offs, and luck-of-the-draw events.

She enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens, watching birds and wildlife, especially at their cottage up north where she could also do some fishing.

Darlene was a former member of the Kegling Guys and Dolls bowling league. She was a fan of the Packers, Badgers and Brewers, but mostly treasured times spent with her family (especially her grandchildren) and dear friends.

Survivors include her husband, Mike of Columbus; a daughter, Diane (David) Hintzmann of Reeseville; two sons, Mark (Maggie Klein) and Todd (Connie) both of Columbus; nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Darrin) Miller, Kayla (Matt) Wachholz, Josh Tietz, Matthew Piekarski, Erin (Ross) Clark, Kayla Weiner, Allison (Ty) Adams, Andraya Piekarski, Alexa Piekarski; two great grandchildren, Caden Wachholz and Zavier Adams; two sisters, Delores (Wilbur) Ott of Wisconsin Rapids and Shirley Erickson of Menasha; a brother, Leonard (Elaine) Przybelski of Junction City; other relatives and friends (notably Sister Kathleen Conlin and Alice Meyers).

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Jerry, George and Clifford Sobczak. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at ST. JEROME’S CHURCH, Columbus. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday at St. Jerome’s Church, and from 9:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to Columbus Community Hospital, The Larson House, Columbus Area Senior Center, or the charity of one’s choice. Special thanks to The Larson House and Generations Hospice Care for their loving care and support.
