Police: Foul play ruled out in Prairie du Chien business fire

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. -

State and local officials said an investigation into a fire that destroyed a Prairie du Chien business does not indicate any foul play.

Firefighters from at least seven departments responded to the large business fire in Prairie du Chien Sunday night.

Nobody was hurt, but the fire at Black Hawk Junction destroyed Slumberland Furniture, and left smoke damage to a few other businesses.

Prairie du Chien firefighters were able to start fighting the fire on the inside of the building, but later had to move to a defensive attack from the outside of the building. That's partially because of the building's arched roof.

"Arched roof, when they let loose it's just instant collapse. So you want to make sure you're clear from the building," said Chief Harry Remz of the Prairie du Chien Fire Department. "Luckily, we had an aerial up top shooting down. Most of it went right inside."

Remz said houses nearby were also evacuated as a precautionary measure. There was a concern embers from the large fire could start fires in those homes. Those houses are fine. The high school was opened as a shelter for those who needed it.

An estimated 150 firefighters from at least seven fire departments responded to the fire.
