Council approves liquor, theater licenses for Orpheum

MADISON, Wis. -

The Orpheum is one step closer to reopening its doors permanently in Madison after the Madison City Council approved its liquor and theater licenses Tuesday night.

Madison Alder Michael Verveer said it was a no-brainer for the council because current owners Gus Paras and Henry Doane both have past experience with liquor licenses in the city.

Verveer said he’s thrilled the Orpheum will remain a mainstay in Madison because it’s a valued resource in the community.

“It’s obviously been a part of Madison’s fabric for generations, and I think under this new, experienced ownership and management, it will continue to be a part of Madison fabric for hopefully generations to come,” Verveer said.

Because of a prior agreement with a bank, the liquor license won’t take effect until mid-February.

The owners plan to continue renovations as quickly as they can, including refurbishing the marquee.
