STOUGHTON, Wis. -

A community banded together Thursday night to remember a young boy taken too soon. Ten-year-old Michael Iverson died Monday when an alleged drunken driver hit his family’s minivan head-on.

Green County sheriff’s deputies said a truck crossed the center line west of Albany Monday night.

Michael’s father, Matt Iverson, was driving and tried to avoid the crash, police said. Michael Iverson died at the scene.

Thursday night, the bleachers at Mandt Park in Stoughton were full of friends and classmates saying goodbye. The tears flowed as people came to honor young Michael’s life.

Fifth graders from Kegonsa Elementary paid tribute to their classmate by making bracelets in two of his favorite colors, orange and pink.

The organizer said Michael’s father is recovering from the crash and his family is waiting until he’s recovered to hold the boy’s funeral.

“We just wanted to create a safe place for people to come and mourn and find peace and try and have closure,” said Katie Bridgwater, the event organizer.

Bridgwater said they also honored Stoughton High School student Tyler Bailey, who passed away recently.

Local businesses donated food and supplies for the vigil. Michael’s classmates plan to sell the handmade bracelets and donate the money to help his family.
