Common Ground On Climate Change

Last week an all too familiar scenario repeated itself in the halls of Wisconsin State government. One party, in this case Democrats, proposed new legislation, and a lobbyist group, in this case Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce pledged to aggressively oppose the legislation. We get it. As tired as it is it’s the way the way the game is played. The problem is the legislation had to do with energy policy and climate change. And we believe those issues are so important that they demand a different approach.

Given the now irrefutable science supporting climate change in our world it is in the interest of both environmental activists and business owners to figure out how to reverse the damage being done and being threatened. We can’t believe business people don’t see the danger. But they don’t want mandates shoved down their throats. And they’re right.

Right now Republican elected officials seem to need to deny climate change for political ideological reasons. But Democrats have to engage more forward thinking business leaders to talk about how to best protect the resources we all depend on. WMC has to be at the table for those talks. We believe they’d participate.
