City will not enforce buffer zone ordinance

Published On: Jul 02 2014 07:11:21 PM CDT

MADISON, Wis. -

A new Madison ordinance that sets a perimeter around certain areas, like abortion clinics, will not be enforced.

Madison city attorneys said part of the buffer zone ordinance will not be followed after the Supreme Court struck down a similar law in Massachusetts requiring protestors and pro-life counselors to remain 35 feet from the entrance of an abortion clinic.

The ordinance limited protesters to a 100-foot radius at certain health clinics. The city will continue to enforce the provision that forbids people from physical obstructing those attempting to enter health care facilities.
