MADISON, Wis. -

Madison police got help from some citizens in tracking down a man suspected of driving while intoxicated and being involved in a hit-and-run crash.

Witnesses told police they saw a man drive a BMW into a light pole in the 2500 block of Packers Avenue Thursday morning. Police said the car was significantly damaged and the light pole was leaning and partially pulled out of the ground.

The driver fled on foot and two citizens gave chase. Police said the men were able to keep up with the driver until officers arrived. James Blandin, 31, of Madison, was arrested in the 1900 block of Windom Way, according to police.

Blandin told police he had been at a party and was dropping off friends at their workplaces. He was the only one in the car at the time of the crash.

Blandin was arrested on suspicion of third-offense operating while intoxicated and bail jumping. He was cited on suspicion of hit-and-run and failure to prove insurance coverage.
