Child-porn suspect ordered to decrypt files

MILWAUKEE -

A federal magistrate has ordered a West Allis man to provide readable versions of encrypted hard drives seized from his home as part of a child-porn investigation.

A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the magistrate's order marks a reversal of his own earlier decision that the Fifth Amendment insulated the suspect from such a mandate.

U.S. Magistrate Judge William Callahan Jr. said the difference is that the FBI has since decrypted part of the system seized from Jeffrey Feldman's apartment. Among the more than 700,000 files were many that constituted child porn.

If Feldman refuses to help agents decrypt the rest of his files by June 4 he could be found in contempt of court.

Feldman's defense attorney, Robin Shellow, said she expects her client will comply if Callahan's ruling isn't overturned.
