Car strikes construction worker; driver crashes, flees

MADISON, Wis. -

Madison police are looking for the driver of a car that struck a construction worker after fleeing an officer Tuesday morning.

Police said the car was pursued after it was spotted going 18 mph over the speed limit on Whitney Way, turned on Regent Street and again to Merrill Crest Drive where there was a paving crew working.

The car clipped a construction worker before crashing at the intersection of Merrill Crest Drive and Old Middleton Road, according to police.

“These are significant injuries to the construction worker, to include burns. They’re non-life-threatening injuries but still, this is a very serious incident, and really, it was going to be a speeding ticket for this driver,” said Joel DeSpain, Madison Police Department public information officer.

The driver left the car and ran away, according to police. The man is described as black, in his late teens to early 20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall with a slim build and wearing blue jeans and a light-colored T-shirt. He might have lost his shoes.

Police are looking for the man in the area of University Avenue and the Spring Harbor neighborhood. The car he was driving was stolen, according to police.

Three K-9 units were brought to the scene to search for the driver.
