MADISON, Wis. -

A proposal in the 2014 Dane County budget would provide $2 million to complete the construction of a new and expanded shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi made the announcement regarding his proposed budget on Tuesday.

Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) has been conducting a multimillion-dollar capital campaign for two years to raise funds for construction of a facility on Fordem Avenue in Madison. The new shelter would be four times the size of the existing shelter.

“A new, larger shelter will ensure that more families who are living in dangerous or life-threatening situations can gain quick access to the safety and refuge they need,” said Parisi. “This investment, combined with the outpouring of community support this project has received, gives us an incredible opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Shannon Barry, executive director of DAIS, said the organization has seen more victims stepping forward since the increase in visibility brought on by news of the plans for a new building. She said the need is greater than expected.
