Brodhead woman accused of stealing from church

JANESVILLE, Wis. -

A Brodhead woman is accused of stealing nearly $90,000 from a Janesville church to pay for her boyfriend’s drug problem, according to a criminal complaint.

Carrie Kolanda, 31, faces charges for theft and forgery.

According to the complaint, Kolanda worked as a secretary at the First Congregational Church in Janesville and had been writing checks to herself as reimbursements for fake purchases.

Officials say Kolanda then forged the signature of the church’s treasurer on the checks.

The complaint says Kolanda says she stole because her boyfriend had been using her credit cards to buy drugs and she needed the money.

The church’s treasurer told officials Kolanda had forged his signature on more than 60 checks between January and October 2012.

Kolanda is tentatively being charged with theft from a business of more than $10,000 and forgery.
