Brewers: Henderson off DL; Braun next?

The Milwaukee Brewers have reinstated pitcher Jim Henderson from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the roster, the club optioned pitcher Tyler Thornburg to Triple-A Nashville.

Manager Ron Roenicke said Sunday he might not immediately use Henderson in his usual closer role upon his return from Single-A Wisconsin.

Roenicke said he wants to be cautious and Henderson could be rusty. The manager added he thinks it makes more sense to use Henderson "somewhere other than the ninth inning."

Henderson strained his right hamstring while pitching in the ninth inning of a 5-2 loss to Pittsburgh on May 24 in Milwaukee

Meanwhile, Ryan Braun was lifted from the Milwaukee Brewers' game Sunday for a pinch-hitter in the third inning because of persistent trouble with his sore right thumb.

Braun struck out in the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. Logan Schaefer batted for him in the third and took his spot in left field.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said before the game he hoped to avoid putting Braun on the disabled list. But Roenicke acknowledged that Braun has had setbacks with the thumb as he has played through the soreness.

Braun is hitting .304 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs.
