Bill would restrict use of drones in state

Published On: Jan 15 2014 07:57:54 PM CST
MADISON, Wis. -

Senate bill 196 that would restrict the use of drones by law enforcement and other groups had a hearing Wednesday.

Lawmakers said it strengthens the Fourth Amendment by banning police from using drones to gather evidence without getting a warrant first.

The bill also prohibits the public from using a drone to record audio and video in areas where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

“If you’re at the Badger game, you know you don’t have a reasonable expectation of privacy there, but if you’re in your backyard with friends having a barbecue, I think the last think you want to see is a drone floating overhead taking a look at what you’re up to,” Rep. Tyler August, R-Lake Geneva, said.

A vote on the legislation is set for the Government Operations, Public Works and Telecommunications Committee next week.
