JANESVILLE, Wis. -

A basement fire caused $42,000 in damage and displaced two people from their Janesville home Wednesday morning, officials said.

The Janesville Fire Department responded to 1653 S. River Road around 11:50 a.m. for a report of a residential fire, according to a release.

Crews initially received reports that an elderly resident was unaccounted for, but the homeowners confirmed to firefighters that all occupants were out of the house, officials said. Crews reported heavy smoke inside the home and initially had trouble finding the origin of the fire.

The origin of the fire was eventually found in the basement, and crews were able to extinguish the blaze, according to the release.

The homeowners told crews they smelled an unfamiliar odor in the home, and left to get a fan to try to ventilate the odor out of the home, officials said. When they returned, fire crews were there.

The fire was contained to the basement, but damage is estimated at $32,000 for the structure and $10,000 for the contents.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
