Badgers offense improves in second scrimmage

MADISON -

The Badgers offense struggled mightily at last week's scrimmage at Camp Randall. Monday, in their second and final scrimmage of fall camp, the offense stepped up, looking considerably improved.

Joel Stave and Curt Phillips both threw crisp passes and orchestrated scoring drives. Phillips had a drive in which he threw a long pass to Jared Abbrederis and then another to Alex Erickson for a touchdown.

The offensive line opened holes for James White, Melvin Gordon and Corey Clement; and the running backs churned out yardage. For the second straight scrimmage, Clement served as the goal line back, scoring a touchdown.

Quarterback Tanner McEvoy struggled again. He fumbled once, before recovering and completing a pass for a short gain, and threw a couple of deflected passes, one caught by Kenzel Doe, and the other intercepted by Joe Schobert. McEvoy also took at least one "sack." To his credit, McEvoy did throw a touchdown to Derek Watt late in the scrimmage.

A crowd of about 1,500 attended the open scrimmage.
