ATF's cigarette sting ripped off

MILWAUKEE -

There's more evidence that agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducting a Milwaukee sting, left behind valuable merchandise that was later stolen.

More than a year before agents conducted a flawed gun-buying sting in Milwaukee they used a south side warehouse to target cigarette sellers trying to cheat the government out of taxes.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that when agents ended the sting last spring, they left behind cases of cigarettes with a retail value of about $82,000. A police report says that by the time the agents got around to picking up the merchandise, two cases with a value of about $10,000, were gone.

The theft is similar to the Riverwest gun-buying sting last fall, in which thieves made off with about $40,000 in merchandise.
