According to the American Dental Association, teeth whitening is an option for anyone with a healthy mouth and who has been to the dentist in the past year.

It’s important to have your teeth looked at by a dentist before you whiten them because the whitener could hide potentially serious issues, such as decay or tooth trauma.

To find out how successful whitening your teeth will be, the ADA suggests holding a piece of white paper next to your teeth. If your teeth appear yellow then it is likely the stains are on the surface and can be lightened through whitening.

Those who should avoid whitening their teeth at home, according to an adviser for the ADA, are people who are sensitive to cold, those who have crowns or fillings on their front teeth, and those who’s enamel has a grayish tint.
