One thing we know about the achievement gap, in part from more than 15 years of Schools of Hope, is it requires a multi-faceted approach to close. That means teachers and parents and schools and communities working together in many different ways.

One of the great assets we have in efforts here in Madison, and in Wisconsin, is the University of Wisconsin. Professors and researchers and staff have been engaged in achievement-gap closing efforts and continue to be.

A great example is the 2013 Diversity Forum being held on campus Monday and Tuesday this week. Because it is partially funded by the UW System’s Growth Agenda for Wisconsin Grant, the focus is statewide. It’s an intensive, two-day agenda of sessions providing opportunities for faculty and staff from the UW System “to share knowledge about strategies and best practices for closing the achievement gap.”

We need to tap into every resource available to make sure all of our kids succeed at school. We appreciate the UW’s contribution to this effort.
