Altoona man receives 12-year prison term for child porn

MADISON, Wis. -

An Altoona man was sentenced in federal court Friday to 12 years in prison for distributing child pornography.

Shannon Van de Veer, 40, will serve a 12-year prison term followed by 25 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to the child porn offense in February, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office statement.

The statement said Van de Veer’s sentence was increased because of “the nature of the images he possessed.” U.S. District Judge William Conley also said Van de Veer was a danger to the community.

The case is part of a program, Project Safe Childhood, that fights child sexual abuse nationwide. More information on the program can be found at www.usdoj.gov/psc.

The Altoona Police Department, Menomonie Police Department, Eau Claire Police Department and the Chippewa Valley Regional Computer Forensics Lab assisted in the investigation against Van de Veer, according to the statement.
