FITCHBURG, Wis. -

Work on reconstructing McKee Road could start this summer if an agreement between Dane County and the city of Fitchburg is approved.

The deal on the $3 million project was announced Monday, and is subject to approval by the Dane County Board and the Fitchburg City Council. The governments are splitting the cost of the project evenly.

"By partnering together, Dane County and the city of Fitchburg will deliver a smooth, new road and ensure it's taken care of the smartest way possible," Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said in a release. "Safe roads are a core function of what we do, and that's why I proposed moving this project up to this summer. Motorists couldn't go another winter with this road in the shape it's in."

Work on the rough stretch of road between Seminole Highway and Fish Hatchery Road is expected to be complete by next winter.

The project also includes a drainage system under the road to move water away.

"The key part is we really want to do this right so it lasts a generation. Think of the amount of traffic that’s going to come up and down the road the next 20 years. It’s halfway between downtown, the capitol, the university and Epic. A lot more than just Fitchburg residents are driving through this, but as we continue to grow as a community, it’s important that we step up as well," Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff said.

As part of the agreement, the city of Fitchburg and Dane County will share the construction costs 50-50, and the city of Fitchburg will begin snow removal on McKee Road between Verona Road and Fish Hatchery Road starting with the winter of 2016-17.

The city will take on full maintenance of the road after the reconstruction of Highway 18/151 project is completed, which is expected to be done by Jan. 1, 2020.

"I am pleased to reach an agreement to fix County Highway PD in 2014," Pfaff said. "This demonstrates that collaboration still works for the betterment of the residents we represent."
