Zoo to introduce penguin chick

Henry Vilas Zoo will introduce the first penguin chick hatched at the zoo in 16 years on Saturday, according to the Dane County Executive's Office.
Meredith is a female African penguin chick that hatched on Jan. 18 after a 40-day incubation period.
Zoo officials said Meredith lost her first fluffy feathers and now has dark, waterproof feathers. Her mother and father are first-time parents.
Meredith’s parents incubated the egg, and shortly before hatching, the egg was fostered to a pair of experienced penguin parents to hatch and raise the chick, according to zoo officials. The zoo hopes the mother and father parent more chicks in the future.
Meredith will be on exhibit starting at 11 a.m.
Henry Vilas Zoo is one of only 53 accredited institutions that exhibit African penguins.
