MADISON, Wis. -

A 19-year-old woman was mugged in downtown Madison on Saturday night.

The incident happened near the intersection of North Henry Street and Langdon Street on Saturday night, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Police said that about 11:20 p.m., the victim and friends walked past a group of people: three young men and one young woman. The victim had just finished texting her father and had returned her new cellphone to a pocket.

Seconds later, the woman from the other group attacked the victim, knocking her to the ground and punching her in the head, Madison police said.

Police said the stranger grabbed the victim's cellphone and ran.

The victim gave chase and tracked the robber down, and with the help of friends, got the phone back after one friend threw money at the criminal, according to the incident report.

All went their separate ways, and police were not called for a half hour.

Police said one witness thought the robber may have been acting on a dare from the young men with whom she was hanging out.

Police said the robber is described as a black woman, standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds with short black hair worn in a "buzz cut," a dark complexion and long eyelashes. She had several piercings in her left ear and was wearing skinny jeans and a dark puffy coat that was possibly a North Face coat, police said.
