Wisconsin conservationists re-launch anti-mine ad

MADISON, Wis. -

Environmentalists are re-cycling a television ad imploring the state Senate to kill a bill that would overhaul Wisconsin's mining regulations.

The GOP introduced a bill last year that was designed to help Gogebic Taconite open an iron mine near Lake Superior. Opponents warned the bill would lead to devastating pollution. The proposal failed by one vote in the Senate in March.

Republicans introduced a new bill in January that closely mirrors the first plan.

The League of Conservation Voters announced Thursday it was running an ad statewide saying the bill would expose families to deadly chemicals and asking people to call senators and tell them to stop the measure.

The bill's author, Republican Sen. Tom Tiffany, said the group is lying about the bill.

The group ran the same ad during debate on last year's bill. Gogebic Taconite officials dismissed the ad then as fear-mongering.
