Wineke: Moving "right" along the religion front

Moving right along on the religion front:

Rep. Paul Broun, R-Georgia, a member of the Science Committee of the United States House of Representatives, says the ideas of evolution and the “Big Bang” theory of the creation of the universe are “lies straight from the pit of hell.”

Those “lies” are being told by folk who want to undermine our need for a “savior,” Broun told an audience at Liberty University.

Now, just to repeat: Paul Broun is a member of the Science Committee of the United States House of Representatives. He is one of the people who get to determine how federal money is spent in the advancement of science.

He’s not the only one. Remember Rep. Todd Akin, R-Arkansas? He’s the guy who explained a few weeks ago that when a woman is the victim of “legitimate rape,” her body will produce some magic chemicals that will keep her from getting pregnant.

Akin, too, is a member of the Science Committee of the United States House of Representatives.

He is also the Republican candidate for the United States Senate in Arkansas.

I don’t know whether to be more fearful for the future of the United States of America or for the future of the Christian Church.

America has always had its share of oddball politicians. They add color to our national dialogue. They give voice to people who wear aluminum foil hats.

But, I think, we have to ask Speaker of the House John Boehner why he would appoint such crackpots to the Science Committee of the House of Representatives.

Their weird view of faith is dangerous to us all.

Because it’s not just abortion and evolution that these guys question: It is all modern science.

It seems to be an item of faith for the most part of the Republican Party that global warming is a myth. The party’s presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, is making increased drilling for oil and increased mining for coal a centerpiece of his energy policy—and is promising to end subsidies for alternatives to fossil fuels.

And, so, while it might be fun to laugh at crackpots like Broun and Akin, there’s more at stake.

We cannot run a modern society on myth. We can try, but it won’t work.

And when one of the two major parties in a country governed by what is essentially a two-party system is taken over by the crackpots, we are all at serious risk.
