White Christmas is good business for some

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. -

When thoughts of a brown Christmas turned into the reality of a white Christmas, there was none happier than winter sports enthusiasts.

Two days after the official start of winter, those who make their living on the existence of snow can once again say that there is no business like snow business.

"Well, winter has certainly arrived with the new snow," said Tyrol Basin ski and snowboard area manager Don McKay. "And it really gets people in the spirit when you can look out the window and see snow everywhere."

The recent blizzard was an early Christmas present to businessmen like McKay.

"Well, yesterday (Saturday) we did about 500 tickets, plus our season pass holders," said McKay. "And that's a good pre-Christmas Saturday for us."

And with 20 inches of fresh powder on the ground, the snowmobile season is ready to go in Dane County.

Snowmobiling clubs like the Waubesa Snowbirds, which operates completely on a volunteer basis, are busy operating and enjoying the hundreds of miles of trails which opened last Thursday.

"These are perfect riding conditions, excellent snow, fairly warm temperatures," said Rod Holden  of Waubesa Snowbirds. "So it's fun to get out now."

"If there is a perfect situation, this is perfect," continued Holden. "Kids are off school, they're out enjoying the great snow, our great trail system in Dane County, about as good as it gets."

And back at Tyrol Basin, the phone is ringing off the hook and everybody's stoked that they can get out and have some snow to ski on.

Tyrol Basin is closed on Christmas Day but re-opens December 26 with plenty of slopes for beginners and advanced skiers to check out.

And of course don't forget those 500 miles of Dane County snowmobile trails that are open.
