What to expect after blood transfusion

After a blood transfusion there are certain follow-up tests a patient can expect to encounter.

It’s pretty typical after receiving a transfusion for your doctor to conduct further blood testing to see how your body is responding to the new blood, the Mayo Clinic states.

Doctors may also test your blood to make sure your blood levels have reached the right levels. The Mayo Clinic says that if a person was anemic before a transfusion, for example, that the doctor may test to see if your red blood cell count was raised after the transfusion.

According to the Mayo Clinic, for cancer patients who have low platelet counts before a transfusion, doctors may check your blood for your platelet count.
