The WISC editorial board was one of the first and remains one of the strongest supporters of the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools. We’ve also made no secret of our admiration and respect for Mary Burke who, among other things, serves on the Madison school board right now. This week the two, the Foundation and Burke, teamed up to make a very targeted and obviously very personal effort to close the achievement gap in Madison public schools.
Madison elementary schools with a 50-percent or greater low income population can apply for a We Can Do It Grant by showing a willingness to implement strategies from a book on closing the achievement gap called “How It’s Being Done.” The one-point-two Million dollar grant is being administered by the Foundation and funded by Burke.


At a time when attention to the gap and ways to close it are as challenging as ever and attracting more attention than ever, this effort, by this person and this organization is just outstanding.
