MADISON, Wis. -

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches and advisories for areas in southern Wisconsin until Thursday night.

Forecasters are tracking a storm with potential snowfall of 6 to 8 inches primarily east of a line from Kewaskum to Darien, with lesser amounts for the rest of the state. This storm could also produce sleet and some freezing rain in southern Wisconsin.

Officials said travel may be difficult on secondary and untreated roads in those areas, especially during the Thursday morning rush hour.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning east of Dane County until midnight Friday morning.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Dane County and areas west until 6 p.m. Thursday.

Meteorologist Gary Cannalte said Thursday will be mostly cloudy with occasional snow, possibly mixed with sleet, freezing rain, or rain, mainly south and southwest of Madison. He said additional accumulations of 1-4 inches are likely during the day Thursday, with the heaviest amounts north and east of Madison.

Light snow will end Thursday night with additional accumulations of 1-2 inches in the evening, mainly east of Madison, Cannalte said, with total accumulations of 2-7 inches with the heaviest amounts northeast of Madison.

Madison Streets Superintendent Chris Kelley said the city we will keep 28 trucks on salt routes and add two sanders to work on hills, curves and intersections of residential streets on Thursday.

Madison is expected to see mixed precipitation change over to snow. The snow is expected to continue to fall throughout most of Thursday morning.

Depending on how this storm develops, the city of Madison may continue working on salt routes in the morning or switch to a larger plowing operation, Kelley said.

Kelley said drivers are reminded to leave early, drive slow, and be on the lookout for ice, especially on bridge decks and intersections.
