MADISON, Wis. -

The Verona boys' hockey team shocked everyone beating defending champion Green Bay Notre Dame in the state semifinals Friday night.

But they don't give out trophies in the semis, they had to win the finals Saturday against Eau Claire Memorial.

It was Verona's first title game appearance.

The Wildcats got off to that fast start they were looking for. Zach Jones deflected in a shot for the game's first goal. Verona led 1-0 in the first.

Then the Old Abes tie the game, then take the lead in the second when Dylan Ross got a rebound goal.

Later in the second: The back breaker, as the Wildcats on the power play but sloppy passing led to a breakaway for the Old Abes. Jacob Bresser scores a  short handed goal.

The Wildcats give up six unanswered and fall short in its first state title game, 6-1.

The Wildcats finish their season with a 27-3 record.

"We had big expectations, but I think I exceeded mine, and so did the team, but it's sad we got this close but we didn't get it, " said senior Zach Jones.

"It might take a day or two for them to realize what they accomplished. Obviously its hard now, everyone having expectations and today after a big win and a big season, it's a tough pill to shallow right now," said head coach Joel Marshall.
