JANESVILLE, Wis. -

Police arrested a Janesville man who investigators suspect is responsible for an attack with an ax that seriously injured two people.

The Janesville Police Department said Jeffrey Starkman, 34, was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, burglary while armed and fleeing an officer.

Police were called to 419 S. Main St. at 10:17 p.m. Saturday after a woman called to report she and a man had been attacked with an ax.

The man and woman were taken to a hospital and treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The man required surgery, according to police. Both are listed in "guarded condition."

Police were not able to find Starkman after an initial search of the area, which included with the help of a K9, on Saturday night.

Police located the man's vehicle on I-90 just before 7 a.m. Sunday and took him into custody at a Beloit truck stop, the report noted.

Investigators said Starkman and the female victim were in relationship and the attack was not a random act.
