TRAINING DOCTORS, AND ADVOCATES

03/19/13

The editorial is a twofer. First a group of four, second year medical students at the UW paid us a visit to tout the benefits of screening for colorectal cancer. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the students suggested ways we could help folks understand that this second leading cause of all cancer deaths is very preventable with early detection and treatment.

But here’s the other part of the deal. The students were visiting us on a class assignment. Part of their course work for the year is public health advocacy, learning how to take an important health message to television station editorial boards and magazine editors and make an effective case for public awareness and education. We happen to know this is something their professor, Renie Schapiro, is especially good at, but we appreciate that the med school has assigned value to it as well. We think it’s important that our doctors be good public health advocates. We’re pleased to say we think we met four good ones in training.
