A Lancaster teen was struck by a vehicle and left on the road, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Cheryl Walton of Lancaster contacted authorities after finding Jacob Colson lying on University Farm Road at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Colson told deputies he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Colson was taken to Grant Regional Health Care and then flown to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison because of a significant leg injury.
"Somebody may have thought they hit a raccoon or a deer or something. They don't know," said Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman.
Colson's friend, Nicole White, said he was seriously injured.
"He had a very bad leg fracture. Not even fracture -- it was broke through his pant leg even," White said.
After Colson was found, he underwent a seven-hour surgery.
"If the person hadn't come along who found him, it could have been an hour or two yet before he was found," Dreckman said.
Dreckman said he is looking for leads in the case and for the driver who struck Colson.
In an interview Wednesday at UW Hospital with a sheriff's deputy, Colson still couldn't ID the make or model of the vehicle that struck him.
"He didn't give us anything this morning, so, at this point, we have nothing to go off of," Dreckman said.
The driver could face felony hit-and-run charges.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Grant County Sheriff's Office at 608-723-2157.
