Stoughton's Troll Beach reopens with new look

STOUGHTON, Wis. -

Stoughton's community pool opened on Saturday with a whole new look.

The spot was once called "The Mud Hole, officials said that it's now making a splash with the community. Troll Beach, formerly known as Mandt Park Pool, is hoping the new changes will offer a new reputation.

For resident Shawn Hartlaub, the new inflatable play equipment, pool chairs and umbrellas are making a big splash at the pool across the street.

"Everybody calls it the Mud Hole, but with the new Troll Beach, I've been telling my daughter we got to call it Troll Beach and she's like, 'I like Mud Hole,' but Troll Beach is so cool."

City officials said that they really didn't want the area to have that kind of reputation so after a $41,000 grant to make changes, officials are hoping residents see the pool differently.

"That goes back to when I was a kid here. If you went out in the center and you went into the very bottom, your feet could go two feet into muck, " said Tom Lynchg Stoughton's parks and recreation director.

Lynch said the budget for running the pool even improved. The city is lowering tax support for the pool by switching from chlorine to a more effective form of bacteria cleaning.

He said it's been a major undertaking.

"For the last month, it feels like everything I've done in my job involves this and some things have had to be put off," Lynch said.
