JANESVILLE, Wis. -

A Milwaukee man was arrested following a police chase and a crash Saturday, the Rock County Sheriff's Office said.

At about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, a deputy from the Rock County Sheriff's Office saw a Chevy Caprice heading northbound on South County Highway D near West Bass Creek Road in Rock Township with license plates that did not belong on the vehicle.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle turned east onto West Bass Creek Road and came to a stop.

A few seconds later, the driver of the vehicle accelerated eastbound on West Bass Creek Road, reaching speeds up to 70 mph with the deputy following, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Office news release.

After traveling approximately one mile from the initial stop, the driver lost control on a curve on South Duggan Road. The Caprice left the east shoulder of South Duggan Road, struck a tree, spun around and came to rest facing the opposite direction.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and fled from the scene on foot, according to the news release.

Several deputies and officers from the city and town of Beloit responded to the area to search for the man.

A K-9 from the city of Beloit tracked the man to a residential area on West Bass Creek Road and along the bank of the Rock River. During the search of the vehicle, a cellphone was located wedged in the dashboard. Deputies used that phone to call 911, which allowed them to find out who the phone belonged to and any addresses associated with it, according to the release.

The cellphone was linked to a woman with prior police contacts at 2906B W. Bass Creek Road.

On arrival, deputies made contact with a neighbor, who said the residence at 2906B has been vacant since the beginning of December. In checking the area around the residence at 2906B, deputies discovered a kitchen door on the backside of the premises standing wide open.

Deputies entered the residence where they located the suspect, identified as Rodney T. Moore, 36, of Milwaukee, hiding in the bathroom, seated in a standup shower with a space heater running.

Moore later admitted he used to stay at that residence with his ex-girlfriend, whom the cellphone belonged to, according to sheriff's officials.

Moore was taken into custody and was transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville. Moore was treated and released and later transported to the Rock County Jail, where he was arrested on numerous charges, including: operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent, fleeing, hit-and-run, operating under the influence of a controlled substance, operating while suspended, operating after registration suspension, criminal trespass to dwelling and criminal damage to property.

Sheriff's officials said Moore was also arrested on six outstanding warrants through the Beloit Police Department and on a parole violation through Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
