Several close races may take weeks to resolve

MADISON, Wis. -

A recent change in state election law means the results of several close races in Dane County may not be known for weeks.

The change pushed back the deadline by which municipal clerks must receive absentee ballots. Those ballots must then be counted, and candidates could weigh a recount if the results are close.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says in one case a Madison School Board candidate holds a 279-vote margin over his opponent. But the Madison city clerk's office is still waiting for more than 1,300 outstanding absentee ballots.

The new law says absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by the city clerk by 4 p.m. Friday. Previously, regular absentee ballots had to be received by the close of polls on Election Day.
