Hodges, R Mayo formerly of Racine, died February 6, 2013 at University Hospital-Madison at an advanced age. Born in Texas, Mayo was a Midwesterner at heart having lived in Madison, Rockford and, for over 50 years, in Racine. Her gardens were a work of art and love. She showered that same love on her parrot, Paco, for 45 years. His life was chronicled in her book Paco, My Protégé, one of the four books she wrote after 2000 and the loss of her husband and hearing.

A woman of indomitable spirit and strength, she is survived by her daughter, Lynn, of Middleton, granddaughter, Jessica (Rob) Brandenburg of Chicago, granddaughter, Deana (Bryan) Condra of Madison as well as her four-month-old great-granddaughter, Courtney Paige Condra.

Mayo was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, with whom she traveled the world.

A heartfelt thank you from Lynn to Dr. Tyler Steward, Dr. Sara Johnson and Nurses Brie and Michaela.
