MADISON, Wis. -

Madison police said they arrested a suspect in a downtown Madison armed robbery with the help of tracking software on the victim's stolen laptop.

The 29-year-old victim told police he was walking into his building in the 400 block of West Main Street about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday when a man came behind him and pointed a silver handgun at him. The robber told him to drop the bag he was carrying and demanded his wallet and cellphone.

The robber took the items and told the victim to wait until he was gone before calling police.

A Madison police detective used tracking software on the victim's stolen MacBook to find the approximate location of the laptop computer Wednesday afternoon.

Several investigators went to the 800 block of East Washington Avenue, which is where the software was showing the approximate location of the MacBook.

Detectives went inside a warming shelter at 827 E. Washington Ave. The MacBook was found, as was a BB gun that looked very much like a real handgun, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Police said the 18-year-old suspect, identified as Alex A. Mann, was also present. Mann was arrested on a charge of armed robbery, according to the incident report.

Police said Mann claims no permanent address, and among his possessions were Greyhound luggage receipts.
