Madison police said thieves stole a wallet from a woman's cart at a Goodwill store and used the victim's cards to make purchases.

Police said the victim is a 69-year-old Oklahoma woman who was quickly flown to Madison with her husband, a Vietnam veteran who was to receive an organ transplant at a local hospital.

Based on the hurried nature in which they left Oklahoma, they were not allowed ample time to pack personal necessities, which led to the woman shopping at Goodwill after arriving in Madison.

While shopping at the Goodwill at 4530 Verona Road, a thief removed her wallet from a cart that she was using. After she realized it was missing, she received a call from her credit card company that questionable transactions were attempted at the Target Store in Fitchburg within the hour, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Police said a second victim, a 25-year-old Madison woman, was also identified. The victim's cards were used to purchase more than $6,000 in gift cards and other merchandise, according to the report.

The Madison Police Department has released surveillance photos of the suspected thieves from the Target store in Fitchburg and is asking for the public's help in identifying the people in the photos.

Police described the suspected thieves as a black man, about 25-35 years old who was wearing a blue coat with a fur collar, blue pants and a brown skull cap. The other thief is described as a woman wearing a double-breasted coat and hat.

Any information leading to an arrest could result in a cash reward, and callers can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.
