Police: Burglar targets Special Olympics office

MADISON, Wis. -

Madison police said a man burglarized the Special Olympics office on Madison's east side Saturday afternoon.

A Special Olympics staff member dropped by her Madison office at 2310 Crossroads Dr. Saturday afternoon and was surprised to find a man there since the office was closed for the weekend.

The stranger was wearing a Torch Run jacket, something law enforcement officers are given for participation in the annual Special Olympics fundraiser.

He told the employee: "It's okay. I'm with law enforcement and am running in the Torch Run," according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Police said the woman thought this odd and questioned the man about this, as no law enforcement officers would be just showing up at the office.

Police said the man became nervous and took off, not just with the jacket but also with a large Special Olympics Torch Run backpack, filled with items, as well as two Special Olympics tote bags.

The woman watched as he walked into a nearby hotel. Police arrived, and the man could not be found; however, stolen Special Olympics property was recovered from bushes outside of the hotel, according to the incident report.

Police said the burglar was described as a "taller" white man who was wearing a dark coat and hat.

The Madison Police Department said it's one of many state law enforcement agencies that participate in the charity, and since 1986, the Wisconsin's Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $19 million for the Special Olympics.
