MADISON, Wis. -

Public donations to Wisconsin's endangered resources protection and management program have hit a 10-year low.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported that donations to such programs have dropped by nearly half in the last decade.

The state Department of Natural Resources program draws 25 percent of its funding from such donations. Sources for those include people buying special license plates or checking a box on their state income tax forms.

Wildlife officials said it's unclear why donations are declining. They're preparing a public education plan to better explain the importance of their work.
