MADISON, Wis. -

A slower than expected commute is expected Monday morning after overnight snowfall.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Monday for Grant, Crawford, Richland and Vernon counties.

A winter weather advisory is in effect from until 9 a.m. Monday for Dane, Sauk, Columbia, Iowa, Lafayette and Green counties.

A winter weather advisory is in effect from until 9 a.m. Monday for Dodge, Jefferson, Rock and Walworth counties.

WISC-TV meteorologist Karin Swanson said total accumulations of 2-6 inches are possible and a low of 12 degrees.

Madison city officials said cold temperatures overnight make the salt less effective so they're using sand until the temperatures rise.

Swanson said Monday will be mostly cloudy and cold with light snow tapering to flurries and ending in the morning, then becoming partly sunny with a high of 18 degrees.

The city of Beloit has declared a snow emergency for Monday. The snow emergency will take effect at 12 a.m. Monday and remain in effect until 12 p.m. Monday.

During the snow emergency, the parking or standing of any vehicle on a city street is prohibited.

The city of Madison said there were 30 crews on the roads Sunday night, applying sand.

Madison city officials will determine if a snow emergency is warranted after Monday morning's commute.
