Packers decline to use franchise tag on Jennings

Published On: Mar 06 2013 07:04:49 AM CST

The Green Bay Packers have declined to use their franchise tag on Greg Jennings, meaning the star wide receiver will become an unrestricted free agent next week.

A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report said Jennings can negotiate with any team starting March 12. His agent can begin speaking with other teams as soon as Saturday, although no deal can be signed until the 12th.

Jennings ranks in the top 10 on the all-time Packers reception list. The Packers could have kept him out of free agency by applying their franchise tag to him by Monday afternoon, but then they would have had to offer him a one-year, $10.5 million contract.

The Packers can still pursue Jennings as a free agent, but that may depend on whether other teams show interest.
